Kicking Horse is famous for its powder and stunning views of the Columbia Valley. From the mountain terrain to the wonderfully energetic staff, you are guaranteed to fall in love with this charming resort that is nestled in the Canadian Rockies. Keep reading for everything you need to know about choosing Kicking Horse Mountain Resort for your next ski day!
Why Choose Kicking Horse?
Kicking Horse is known as the champagne powder capital of Canada. “Champagne Powder Snow” is very light, dry, and smooth due to the low water content. Because of that, it is highly regarded as the best snow for skiing. It`s usually so light and dry you can’t even make a snowball! We actually noticed this difference right away – they had the best snow in the area by a long shot!
“From steep and gnarly chutes, to fast and fun glades, and even smooth and gentle groomers. The on snow experience at Kicking Horse is exceptional for the whole family.”
Another great thing about this resort is the crowds. They are substantially smaller compared to the neighboring ski hills across the provincial border! What this meant for us was that we literally couldn`t keep up to the fresh snow that was falling! What a terrible problem to have 😉
Kicking Horse has a great beginner’s area and offers a selection of lessons to fit all needs. They`ve also got enough variety to keep a beginner/intermediate skier entertained for hours on end. The Catamount Chair services primarily blue and green runs making it the perfect place to start off your day as a beginner. Once you`ve got your bearings, you can access similar runs from the very top of the Golden Eagle Express!
Although the resort is definitely suitable for any experience level; the more advanced runs at Kicking Horse were our favorite areas. The hill consists of over two thirds black diamond and double black diamond runs. This makes it an excellent place for skiers and snowboarders looking for exhilarating terrain and tons of powder! Some of our favorite areas were the Crystal Bowl and The Fuez Bowl right around redemption ridge.

The village at Kicking Horse is big enough to have everything you might need but still small enough to make it feel cozy and authentic. With a huge variety of beautiful accommodation and very reasonable stay & ski packages; you can just focus on enjoying your time!
If you`re looking for other winter activities, Kicking Horse has you covered! You can spend a day cross country skiing, try out snow tubing or go for an evening skate on the village’s ice rink.
Of course if you`re looking for a more relaxed day, you can also wander around the shops and try out some of the local eateries. Make sure to have a meal at the Eagles Eye Restaurant on the very top of the hill. The food is fantastic and the views are out of this world!
Kicking Horse Mountain Resort is located about 1.5 hours West of Banff or 2.5 hours West of Calgary. With a daily bus stopping at multiple Banff hotels and in Lake Louise, it`s never been easier to access great snow! They even offer a shuttle from the Calgary International Airport to the resort twice per week. And finally, if you plan on doing a road trip like we did, RV & camper vans are permitted to park overnight for FREE.
